Brooks Macdonald team complete three peaks

On 1st July, 23 intrepid Brooks Macdonald staff embarked upon the 3 Peaks challenge. For those who are unaware, this means climbing/walking the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales, (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon respectively) within 24 hours. Minibuses driven by Vince Harvey, Keileigh Allen and Stephen McGuigan drove the three teams led by Bobby Shirley, Tim Martineau and Thomasina McGuigan between each peak.

The walk was long and tough, Ben Nevis is 1344 metres, but Bobby and Thom’s teams completed it in 5 hours 45, and Tim’s team in 6 hours 10. Importantly they managed to get back down to ground level before dusk and then endured the 6 hour journey to Scafell Pike in the Lake District.

The teams started the ascent at 3am, 3.30am and 4.30 am respectively. Scafell is 978 metres with terrain very similar to Ben Nevis, Bobby’s team were living up to their “fast team“ reputation completing the leg in at 3 hours 30, Thom’s team in a respectable 4 hours 40 minutes and Tim’s team 5 hours 15 with some seriously sore knees with 6 of his team of 8 aged over 40.

Unlike the other two peaks, Snowdon gave some respite as there was some relatively good terrain and flat ground skirting a couple of lakes. The only negative factor being that at all points during the walk Snowdon was looming large at 1085 metres above.

But, all three teams reached the top and can be said to have conquered the 3 peaks. Special congratulations to Bobby’s team who made it within the 24 hours. A very well done to Thom and Tim’s team who made it not long after.

It was an experience that none of them will forget and outlined the camaraderie that was enjoyed by all.

In total £1,878 was raised for The Help for Heroes fund.  For more information visit www.bmycharity.com/BM3peaks

And a massive thanks to the BM Foundation who donated £2,250 to the Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund.
